Current GAPNET Projects

Below are some projects we are currently undertaking:

Project 1: Veterinarians Without Boarders (VWB) - Canada

GAPNET partners with VWB to build the capacity of staff, community members, farmers, women groups through animal health trainings. Gender Equality training, vaccination against peste des peste ruminates (PPR) in sheep and goats, vaccination against Newcastle disease in rural poultry and deworming. VWB also supported Gapnet with resources to train 90 community animal health workers in the Kassena-Nakana district. Which serve as an interface between the livestock holder and veterinary service providers, communicating digitally with the veterinary service directorate on disease situations and bringing the feedback (remedies or what to do) to farmers at the earliest time possible and focusing on one health principles.

Project 2: Brooke, Action for Working Horses and Donkeys

Brooke West Africa have worked in Senegal since 2010 to improve conditions for the country's working horses and donkeys. Brooke West Africa carries out a range of advocacy work, aiming to create links with and influence local, regional, national and continental government departments as well as veterinary clinics, medical organizations universities and non-governmental organizations. Brooke West Africa partners with GAPNET to fight against donkey extinction (FADE). The project is to prevent the extinction of the donkey species in Ghana in the wake of the huge international donkey skin trade through a review of the policy and legal frameworks governing the donkey trade. That is to completely enhance the donkey welfare and end the skin trade in Ghana. Brookes West Africa and GAPNET has put together activities such as radio jingles and discussions in English and the local dialects to on the mass slaughter of donkeys, formed donkey owner associations and monitoring teams, held various stakeholder meetings, erected signposts at vantage points with inscriptions to stop the mass slaughter, training of local vets to provide better services for the donkeys etc.

Project 3: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) - UK

The CAHWs carry out these activities by serving as an interface between the livestock holders and Veterinary Services at the community levels communicating digitally with them on disease situations and rumors of disease outbreaks and bringing the feedback (what to do) to farmers at the earliest time possible thus contributing to the emergency preparedness of the Veterinary Epidemiology Unit.
